Last weekend, one of my sisters and I volunteered to do a couple of hours of gardening at my mother’s care facility. This year, the facility is working with volunteers from Vancouver Master Gardeners and their Healing Gardens Outreach Programme. It was fun to work with a team of women wanting to contribute their time and knowledge to improve the gardens in my mother’s facility.
Although we had to smile to ourselves. Last year, two of my siblings and me, we were the gardeners. It was brutal, as the gardens had not been properly weeded and tended to in quite some time. We battled weeds over three feet in height. Our first day on the job, we worked from 8 am to 5 pm; I could barely move by the end of the day. The Auxiliary affectionately dubbed us the “Garden Meisters”! We did the Spring clean-up and the Fall clean-up, and I am happy to report that our hard work paid off, as this year, the weeding was a breeze.
